Need ideas for integrating relevant assessment? Here’s an example of what we are doing with one of our clients.

Our client is updating their OH&S training. As part of hazard recognition, we have a series of mini scenarios like the one below. Participants are to identify the hazard category the scenario represents.

Priyanka is working in the kitchen and hurriedly reaches for a pot on a high shelf. In her haste, she accidentally knocks over a container of hot oil, causing it to spill onto the floor.

What makes this scenario effective?

  • The client identified spills and burns in the kitchen as an issue to be addressed.

  • It is simple yet accurately depicts something that happens in the workplace.

  • It is aligned to the learning objective of identifying hazard categories.

  • It can lead to a rich discussion among participants, as it is relevant. This increases motivation and learning.

Scenarios are powerful because they can:

  • provide immediate feedback to participants and facilitators

  • align to the job role

  • be customized to fit the organization’s needs
